SANTA CLARA — Three practices at 49ers training camp have offered a mere appetizer of what’s to come, from the stars to the scrubs. Here is a premature evaluation of an under-the-radar player (or not an entrenched starter) at each position that’s sparking intrigue:
Jaylon Allen and the San Francisco 49ers are drawing attention after the team brought in the former UFL edge rusher for a workout. As training camps get underway across the NFL, the 49ers continue evaluating edge rusher depth, and Allen has emerged as one of the names under consideration.
Mac Jones clearly isn't better than Brock Purdy -- that's evident when you watch them practice side by side. Purdy is an elusive playmaker, and Jones is not.
Perhaps no coordinator in the NFL is under more pressure than Saleh, whom the 49ers pounced on in the offseason following his dismissal last Oct. 8 as head coach of the New York Jets. Saleh did some consulting for Green Bay, had a couple of head coaching interviews, but ultimately returned to the 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers have undergone a roster reset, bringing in more youth and creating opportunities for rookies to compete.

With training camps underway it's officially time to get to predictions for the 2025 NFL season. We're going to wait to make our official predictions because there are a ton of things that still need to sort themselves out with the San Francisco 49ers and around the NFL. So much can change with one injury or one trade in the preseason.
