Today against the Giants, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts fumbled on a tush push, and the Giants recovered. It was clearly and obviously a fumble. No question about it. But the officials ruled that Hurts’ forward progress had been stopped.
There was increased scrutiny on the tush push this season after team owners held a vote to ban the play this past offseason. Though that vote fell short, Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones told Yahoo Sports last week he expects another vote to be held to ban the tush push this coming offseason.
Since it isn't the end zone and should have still been a live ball, the Giants thought they forced a turnover. Yet the officials said Hurts' forward progress was stopped and rewarded the Eagles with a first down on a play that was not reviewable because of the call.
Fox rules analyst Dean Blandino said, "To me, he is pushing forward, he is reaching. That is an early whistle, in my opinion."
