Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency over the weekend to aid three counties in southern Michigan — Cass, Branch and St. Joseph — that were hit by four tornadoes on Friday afternoon.

A powerful storm system moving over southern Michigan on the afternoon of March 6 spawned at least one confirmed tornado, killing four people and injuring more than a dozen others.

First responders from multiple agencies were in the Union Lake area near Union City searching for more possible victims and clearing roads, authorities said.
