For the target audience, you probably can't go wrong with Bob LeVitus' Mac OS X Panther For Dummies book. It's current and I saw a favorable review on TidBITS or one of those sites not log ago.

I don't think it's that difficult to learn, but old dog new tricks, etc.<BR>So I'd like to gift him a Mac for dummies type book as well, but I wanted your opinion (s) on what the best book out ...
