California Democrats pushed back after President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to respond to anti-immigration raid protests in the Los Angeles area.
Before Saturday, the last time a president made use of Guard troops to deal with civil unrest without being asked to do so by the state’s governor was in 1965.
The Trump administration said it would send 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles after a second day in which protesters confronted immigration agents during raids of local businesses.
