Dozens of people were injured in car crashes in Missouri and Kansas during the massive snowstorm. One Jackson County public works employee, Everett Carter, was killed during snow removal operations in Blue Summit.
The developing storm system is forecast to bring heavy snow, crippling ice and severe weather across the country through the next three days.
Kansas City police are investigating after discovering a man dead in a car early Tuesday. Kansas City, Missouri, police said officers on patrol in the area of East 30th Street and Indiana Avenue noticed a car stopped in the road and facing the wrong way around 12:15 a.m.
The trooper was referring to the scene as ice shut down lengthy stretches of Interstate 70 in the state and triggered wrecks all along the way. It was just the beginning of a major winter storm's impact on tens of millions from the Plains and Midwest to the mid-Atlantic.
