An Australian man lived for 100 days with an artificial titanium heart while he awaited a donor transplant, the longest period to date of someone with the technology.

A man who received the device in a six-hour surgery last November has become the first patient in the world to be discharged from the hospital with it. He lived with the high-tech heart for over 100 days before receiving a donor transplant.

The artificial heart uses magnetic levitation – the same technology used in high-speed trains – to pump blood around the body.
