A Miami jury has ordered the automaker to pay up to $243 million after finding that the Tesla vehicle had a “defect.” It's the first time Tesla has been found liable in an Autopilot-related crash.

The jury verdict is one of the first major legal decisions about driver assistance technology that has gone against Tesla. Both Elon Musk and Tesla have spent years making claims about Autopilot's capabilities.

A Miami jury decided Tesla was partly responsible for a deadly 2019 crash in Florida involving its Autopilot driver assist technology. The automaker said it will appeal.
