Former colleagues and supervisors of Christopher Schurr, the ex-Grand Rapids police officer on trial for murder, claimed Schurr acted reasonably during a traffic stop that led to Patrick Lyoya’s death.

There’s no question about how Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese immigrant, was killed. Lyoya was fatally shot in the back of the head while on the ground by a Michigan police officer, who was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.

Moments after the prosecution rested its case, the defense requested to have the trial dismissed entirely. This request was based on testimony from two out-of-state witnesses for the prosecution, who spoke about former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s use of force during his deadly confrontation with Patrick Lyoya.
