U.S. President Donald Trump's successive announcements of deals setting baseline tariffs on the European Union and Japan are prompting questions about whether they're a road map for Canada to follow in trade talks.

As the August 1st deadline neared, Mr Trump signalled late progress with key trading partners, announcing a deal with South Korea late on Wednesday while also saying he would hold last-minute talks to India – just hours after he announced 25 per cent tariffs on the country.

Recent pacts with Britain, Europe and Japan mean that autos exported from those countries and regions face lower U.S. tariffs than Canadian vehicles do.

Price hikes are in the mid-single digits across categories, a spokesperson for the company said. Consumer goods, food and drink companies have struggled with lackluster sales since the pandemic, as shoppers have balked at increasingly expensive name-brand packaged food.
