A Michigan jury is considering whether a former police officer was justified in fatally shooting a Black man who had taken the officer's Taser and was facedown in a struggle

Former colleagues and supervisors of Christopher Schurr, the ex-Grand Rapids police officer on trial for murder, claimed Schurr acted reasonably during a traffic stop that led to Patrick Lyoya’s death.

Moments after the prosecution rested its case, the defense requested to have the trial dismissed entirely. This request was based on testimony from two out-of-state witnesses for the prosecution, who spoke about former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s use of force during his deadly confrontation with Patrick Lyoya.
