Signal isn’t the only end-to-end encrypted messaging app available, but its protocol serves as the backbone of other popular EE2E messaging alternatives like WhatsApp.

Some immigrant advocacy groups are moving from WhatsApp to Signal, a more secure messaging app. They say it helps protect conversations and updates. But not everyone is ready.

While WhatsApp has no monetization in place, like paying a subscription, neither does Signal. However, Signal is run as a non-profit and is funded through donations and grants.
