In 2000, I fought very hard to create something called the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program in the aftermath of the awful cold storage warehouse fire which claimed the lives of six Worcester firefighters in December of 1999. I learned at that time that our firefighters were not always given the best equipment, so I worked with my colleagues to form the AFG program and ensure that local communities could afford to keep first responders safe.
