The Sámi language, like many other Indigenous languages – including those spoken by First Nations people across Australia – has been threatened by policies of assimilation. But with support from Norway’s representative body, the Sámi Parliament, there are initiatives to help the language thrive by passing it on to the next generation. In Idjagieđas, I wrote one of the songs in a language that doesn’t actually exist. A lot of people think it’s in Sámi, but it’s not. The words blossomed inside me, or maybe outside me and came through me. In our culture, we believe our ancestors send us messages. So perhaps, this was one of these messages someone, somewhere, wants to deliver and uses me as a channel.
