Today's tune, 'The reason' was written by Colonel Ernest Rance. Colonel Rance accompanied our band on its 1950 'Peace and reconciliation' Tour of Germany. The more reflective nature of the tune allows us to reflect on the words of the song below, 'Would you know why I love Jesus'. Songbook 912 Would you know why I love Jesus, Why He is so dear to me? 'Tis because my blessèd Saviour From my sins has ransomed me. This is why I love my Jesus, This is why I love Him so: He has pardoned my transgress

Today's beautiful melody, arranged by Andrew Mackereth, has been popular in Scandinavia for many years but as with all choruses passed on in the oral tradition, the actual words and melody have seen some alteration en route. The words are based on Psalm 139 v 5, "You are all around me on every side; you protect me with your power." As you listen to the music today we pray that you will feel God's presence with you. | Coventry City Salvation Army Band

Here's a Gowans and Larsson number, from the musical 'Hosea', to set your feet tapping today! Down the street comes the band of The Salvation Army, With trumpets, tabrettes and trombones, And they stay and they pray and they beat out their message In quite unmistakable tones; And it kind of takes hold of a man In a kind of a way nowt else can; And you're glued to the spot If you like it or not, And you just kind of alter your plan; And you're glued to the spot If you like it or not, 'Cause you f

For the City of Coventry, 14th November is a very important date. It marks the Anniversary of 'Operation Moonlight Sonata'. 85 years ago, on the night of 14th November 1940 into 15th November, more than 4,300 homes in Coventry were destroyed by enemy aircarft and around two-thirds of the city's buildings were damaged. In total 568 people were killed. In 1950, our Band became, we believe, the first Salvation Army Band from an Allied country to visit Germany, in a 'Peace and Reconciliation' Tour.

Back to the archives for today's music that we played at our 'Coventry City Band at home' concert in March 2022. The march, 'Exultant' is by Phil B. Catelinet and uses the chorus of a song by Ensign W Percy, an Australian Salvation Army officer. You will hear the chorus at the end of the march. We've included all the words of the song, below, as particularly verses 3 and 4 echo our motivation for 'Tune a day'. Sometimes when you rise at the dawning, The mist you will see all around; But though i

Our music today, 'The Well is Deep' is brought to us by Helen and Steve. The words (Songbook 430) were written by General Albert Orsborn. For a number of years this was one of the songs that our band featured as a Band Song in their musical festivals. Life is a journey; long is the road, And when the noontide is high Souls that are weary faint 'neath their load, Long for the waters, and cry: The well is deep and I require A draught of the water of life, But none can quench my soul's desire For a

One of the pieces of music that we will feature at our 'Last night of the remembrance Proms' is 'Fantasia on British Seas Songs'. The msuic features at least two tunes that are in The Salvation Army tune book. Today we use 'The anchor weighed', the chorus of which appears as 'Praise God, I'm saved'. Watch tomorrow to find out the next tune! Better still come along on Saturday evening to hear our full programme. | Coventry City Salvation Army Band

Today we have a Salvation Army carol, written by General Evangeline Booth. There's a light in the sky, Though the sky be dark It's the light of the Star in the East. There's a song in the storm, Though the storm be long; It's the song that my heart loves the best. It's the song that broke over Bethlehem's hill, The angels song: Peace on earth, goodwill! And the song made the whole world thrill, Lovely song of the Star in the East. There's a thorn on the rose That in fragrance grows In the woodla

Today's tune is certainly a Salvation Army young peoples classic, even the Bandmaster remembers playing it in the Junior Band at Sunday School! The tune is called 'Song of the highway' and the song 'Jesus with what gladness'. The words were written by a Salvation Army Officer, Gladys May Taylor. Jesus, with what gladness I can truly sing: Thou art my redeemer, friend and guide and King; Thou art mine for ever; I will give to thee All my life and treasure; thine alone I'll be. All I have I give t
