Even with very limited visibility while riding in Island Park today we saw a rider triggered avalanche from a few days ago and then later a small slide triggered today (2/8/24). The snowpack is unstable and human triggered avalanches are likely. As more snow piles up these slides are started to break deeper but also give less feedback before avalanching. Widespread weak layer Island Park, Dec 17, 2024 - The snow surface became very weak and faceted during dry weather in the first two weeks of December. This layer exists on nearly all slopes and all aspects and was recently loaded by snow containing 1.5 to 2 inches of water. From the top of Sawtell Peak, we spotted one recent avalanche that likely happened on this layer.
